Overview

With emblematic brands BFMTV and RMC SPORT, Altice is France's third-largest private media group, and boasts an editorial offering that combines quality news, sport and entertainment.

Launched in 2005, BFMTV is the leading news channel in France, with 12.3 million viewers daily. BFMTV features 20 hours of live coverage every day and a newsroom of more than 250 journalists covering national and international news.

RMC SPORT offers the best of European football and combat sports, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Europa Conference League, UEFA Super Cup and UFC.

Launched in 2016, BFM PARIS ILE-DE-FRANCE is the most-watched local news channel in Île-de-France, with 1 in 3 of the region’s residents tuning in. Visits to its digital news channel, website and dedicated app have grown by 200% in 12 months.

Challenge & Context

With its existing digital asset management (DAM) software approaching end of life, Altice France was in need of a new solution on which to streamline its BFM Video monetization platform. Its storefront, used by audiovisual professionals worldwide, contains more than 150,000 videos from BFMTV / BFM Paris Île-de-France and RMC SPORT. Alongside the latest French, international and sports news is footage from as far back as 2005.

Key for the organization was a platform that would keep up with its growing monetization business and give its global customer base a great content buying experience. The new solution also had to integrate with its existing production asset management and legacy archive storage (Dalet) to retrieve the assets and start monetizing them with Moments Lab (ex Newsbridge).

This translated into a need for a scalable cloud media hub and monetization platform, accessible from anywhere, with an elastic data lake and third party integration compatibility.

Moments Lab Solution

Following demonstrations and technical tests, Altice France chose Moments Lab and its new BFM Video monetization platform was launched within just two months. The Moments Lab solution includes:

  • A Cloud Media Hub.
  • White label Media Marketplace.
  • Bring-Your-Own-Storage
  • Custom thesaurus and taxonomy entries.
  • Built-in video tools.
  • Auto-updating Collections folders that group specific media.

Altice France’s Media Marketplace - How it Works

Altice France’s ‘BFM Video’ Moments Lab (ex Newsbridge) Media Marketplace.

Through an integration with Dalet, 9,000 hours of Altice France’s legacy archive was retrieved and automatically indexed in Moments Lab media hub using existing metadata. An additional 250 hours of video is added to the platform each month. Custom thesaurus and taxonomy entries detailing labels, locations, themes, categories and people are created in both English and French. These are stored and linked together to create an extremely efficient knowledge graph, and enable next-level, semantic search of the media.

The BFM Video storefront was set up on the white label Media Marketplace, with a custom URL, logo, homepage hero banner and login landing page. Automatic watermarks are applied to all media to prevent unauthorized use.

The BFM Video Media Marketplace features smart ‘Collections’ folders that automatically update with new media.

Through granular management of rights and permissions, internal buyers (from BFMTV and RMC SPORT) have unfettered access to the media.

BFMTV documentalists make use of the media hub’s intelligent ‘Collections’ feature that automatically groups video files according to specified parameters. This, coupled with the semantic search bar, ensures that even the most time-pressed users can quickly find the footage they’re looking for.

Automatic watermarks are applied to the footage to prevent unauthorized use.

Buyers including international TV networks, documentary and filmmakers use built-in clipping tools to select the sequences they wish to purchase. The footage is transcoded to their desired format at checkout, and a request is sent to a media manager for order processing.

Buyers use built-in clipping tools to make their selection and add the sequences to their cart.

Morgane Marquette, Head of the Archive Department at BFMTV, said:

The speed at which Moments Lab retrieved our archive and set up the new online storefront really exceeded expectations. The Media Marketplace enables us to scale BFM Video very quickly and grow the monetization arm of our business. I’m delighted with platform features such as the intelligent Collections to easily catalog footage for our customers.

Moments Lab Co-Founder and CEO, Philippe Petitpont, commented:

Altice France has such a rich video archive. We’re proud to be helping them to showcase their news and sports media assets, and unlock a new source of revenue.”

Petitpont continued:

Media organizations are increasingly looking for ways to generate new revenue and see a greater return on investment on their media - be it photo, video archives or livestreams. The Moments Lab Cloud Media Hub and white label Media Marketplace makes this possible like never before.
